The Stories Behind Valley Street Names Part 2 - presented by Mark Tapio Kines

June 27 at 7:00 p.m. - at the Andres Pico Adobe

If you missed Mark Tapio Kines at the September 2023 Speaker Meeting, you missed one of the most interesting programs in memory. The why and where and who of street names paint a fascinating picture of local history. Mark’s enthusiasm and research make for fascinating stories. We are thrilled that he has agreed to return to continue the saga.

When Mark Tapio Kines began his interest in street names, he assumed the obvious stories were correct, particularly when everyone was repeating them. He told fascinating stories of how he dug into records and dispelled many myths of street name origins. For example, when a town was annexed to LA, if it had a “Main Street,” and there was already a “Main Street," the annexed street had to change its name, because before zip codes there was no way to distinguish one from another. Some street names honored friends or loved ones while others were left to civil engineers and their "idea files." You can learn more by going to @LAStreetNames on Instagram, Facebook & X.

Street Names, in May 2020 and has investigated and written about the origins of street names across Los Angeles County, with nearly 1,700 completed write-ups so far.
