May 31st at 11:00 a.m. - at the San Fernando Pioneer Memorial Cemetery.
You must not miss this always-inspirational event. Freedom is not free.
The San Fernando Valley Historical Society will host a free Memorial Day Observance at the historic San Fernando Pioneer Memorial Cemetery in Sylmar from 11 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. on Monday, May 31, 2021.
The 19th annual observance will include a wreath laying ceremony, U.S. flag-raising, rifle salute, and “Taps.” Other program participants include Champions in Service, the Marine Corps League-San Fernando Detachment #1277 and American Legion Post 176.
This year the seating will be distanced and we ask that you bring a mask, water and that you social distance. We will not have tents or be providing water. Chairs will be limited to allow for distancing. You are welcome to bring your own in case we run out.
The program not only pays tribute to our fallen military heroes who’ve perished defending our freedoms but will also highlight information on the history of Memorial Day which began after the Civil War ended in 1865, just nine years before Pioneer Cemetery was founded. This is the second oldest graveyard in the San Fernando Valley and contains the remains of local residents, immigrants, and five Civil War veterans.
Gates open at 10 a.m.
The cemetery is located at 14451 Bledsoe Street in Sylmar, at the corner of Foothill Boulevard. For additional information call 818-365-7810.
