Monday, May 29th from 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. - San Fernando Pioneer Cemetery
On Monday, May 29, the Pioneer Cemetery in Sylmar was the location of the SFVHS Annual Memorial Day Observance. The event was attended by the most folks in recent memory. Soundmaster Bobby Arias from Champions in Service again set the lively patriotic tone with his rousing music. The Colors were presented by Marine Corps League, San Fernando Valley Detachment #1277. Cathe Casillas sang “The Star-Spangled Banner.” SFVHS President Ron VanDeest welcomed attendees and Pioneer Cemetery Committee Chair Joyce Gaynor gave a reading.
The Honorable State Senator Caroline Menjivar, 20th District, reflected on her US Marine Corps experience. The songs of each branch of the military were sung as those who served in each were invited to stand. Reverend Art Guzman of the Marine Corps League led the prayer for the fallen. The Marine Corps League continued with the Flag raising, wreath laying, rifle salute and Jose Razo played “Taps”. The event ended with the retrieval of the colors and all singing “God Bless America.”
Memorial Day honors the U.S. military personnel who have died while serving in the United States armed forces. This yearly ceremony is always important and meaningful. This year was no exception. We live in the land of the free, because of the brave.
